Reclaim Conservatism

September 2, 2009 2 comments

Well, if you have not notices I have not been writing that much political commentary lately, just posting cartoons and fun stuff. I guess I have gotten the blogger’s block again.  I am going to get back to posting more political stuff , I have just got a few other projects and family stuff.

But while I am on the subject My friend is looking for people to post at his Reclaim Conservative blog.   Am the name suggests, it is a blog about how to get Conservatism back into the GOP, which has been lacking for a while now.

Also another good place to join in Theodore Media. Or if you want to post here, leave a comment or email me at stixblog at g mail dot com.

McCain, Blogs, e-Mail and Adam Brickley

September 13, 2008 1 comment

H/T Jonah Goldberg of The Corner at NRO.  Here’s part of an interview of John McCain in the New York Times earlier this year.  I guess Obama’s people didn’t read it before putting together that ad about how computer illiterate he was.

The Times Interviews John McCain

Following is an excerpt . . . of an interview conducted by The New York Times’s Adam Nagourney and Michael Cooper with Senator John McCain in Hudson, Wis., on July 11. The answers are transcribed verbatim; some of the questions are paraphrased. The other people Mr. McCain refers to, who were in the room, are his wife, Cindy; Mark Salter, a senior adviser; Brook Buchanan, his press secretary; and John Taylor, an economic adviser.

[snip]

Q: What websites if any do you look at regularly? Bw_computer

Mr. McCain: Brooke and Mark show me Drudge, obviously, everybody watches, for better or for worse, Drudge. Sometimes I look at Politico. Sometimes RealPolitics, sometimes.

(Mrs. McCain and Ms. Buchanan both interject: “Meagan’s blog!”)

Mr. McCain: Excuse me, Meagan’s blog. And we also look at the blogs from Michael and from you that may not be in the newspaper, that are just part of your blog.

Q: But do you go on line for yourself?

Mr. McCain: They go on for me. I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. I don’t expect to be a great communicator, I don’t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need – including going to my daughter’s blog first, before anything else.

Q: Do you use a blackberry or email?

Mr. McCain: No

Mark Salter: He uses a BlackBerry, just ours.

Mr. McCain: I use the Blackberry, but I don’t e-mail, I’ve never felt the particular need to e-mail. I read e-mails all the time, but the communications that I have with my friends and staff are oral and done with my cell phone. I have the luxury of being in contact with them literally all the time. We now have a phone on the plane that is usable on the plane, so I just never really felt a need to do it. But I do – could I just say, really – I understand the impact of blogs on American politics today and political campaigns. I understand that. And I understand that something appears on one blog, can ricochet all around and get into the evening news, the front page of The New York Times. So, I do pay attention to the blogs. And I am not in any way unappreciative of the impact that they have on entire campaigns and world opinion.

Q: You read newspapers then.

Mr. McCain: I read them most all every day.

Q: You and Obama are both newspaper and book readers. Do you read them in the old paper version or do you read them online?

Mr. McCain: I love to read them in the print form, and the reason why I do is because so much, the prominence of the story matters. If I read a story and say, Oh my God, did you see this? But it’s back on A26, it doesn’t have the impact of what are still – even though it’s declining – what are still, what are hundreds of millions of American picking up an looking at today. And that’s why I really think that reading it is, it helps me more than, now, because I don’t read all the newspapers – I don’t see, for example, the L.A. Times every day, or the San Francisco Chronicle, or the Arizona Republic when I’m away. So we go then, of course, online, and look at them.’

Here’s part of Jonah’s post that included the link to the Times interview.

Wondering No More   [Jonah Goldberg]

Yep. The day after 9/11, as part of its "get tough" makeover, the Obama campaign is mocking John McCain for not using a computer, without caring why he doesn’t use a computer. From the AP story about the computer illiterate ad:

"Our economy wouldn’t survive without the Internet, and cyber-security continues to represent one our most serious national security threats," [Obama spokesman Dan] Pfeiffer said. "It’s extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn’t know how to send an e-mail."

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by "extraordinary." The reason he doesn’t send email is that he can’t use a keyboard because of the relentless beatings he received from the Viet Cong in service to our country. From the Boston Globe (March 4, 2000):

McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain’s encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He’s an avid fan – Ted Williams is his hero – but he can’t raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.

In a similar vein I guess it’s an outrage that the blind governor of New York David Paterson doesn’t know how to drive a car. After all, transportation issues are pretty important. How dare he serve as governor while being ignorant of what it’s like to navigate New York’s highways.

Adam Brickley’s Blog

In all the hubbub the evening of Obama’s acceptance speech, and anticipation of McCain making hisDraft_sarah_palin  VP pick, I was surfing around and discovered a website called DraftSarahPalin.com.  This site had been beating the drums for her for almost a year.  A guy named "Drew" dropped in to their live blogging and started giving little hints about who McCain was not picking and teasing them by saying that they would be very happy who he did name the next day.   At first the regulars thought he was a troll, but they started working on airline schedules and finally figured out the Lear jet story – 2 planes originating in Anchorage ending up in a small airport near Dayton.  The blog became the source for the MSM and CNN was seen to be watching their little blog on air.

The next morning "Drew" confessed he was part of the McCain campaign and said the candidate and his crew had been keeping track of Palin by watching their blog!  The blog got the official leak and beat out CNN, MSNBC, etc. etc. etc.  by hours and had nearly a million hits once the word got out.  Now that’s sophisticated use of the blogosphere.  The whole thing rolled out like a detective and mystery story.  What fun.   Adam Brickley is now famous – you may have seen him being interviewed on TV.  Check out his blog http://palinforvp.blogspot.com/.

McCain’s crew had the most imaginitive use of the internet of any of the campaigns.  They didn’t need to continually send people to Alaska, they could keep up with her doings by checking out Adam’s blog.  Amazing.

Sorry for all the confusion

August 9, 2008 Leave a comment

I decided to keep the blog the waty it is.   I do not need the agrivation of going thru all the code and making sure it is right.   It is easier in the easy mode here.   One of these days I will try and update and maybe even go over to WordPress or something, but right now I have too many other things going on to mess with coding.   I am not a coder.  I can take a computer apart and put it back to together, or make sure that computers are talking to eachother, but looking at code gives me headaches.

So now back to noemal business
