The Obama Salute and the Search for Eden
The US News & World Report informs us that Obama supporters have invented the "O" salute and want the crowds at the stadium in Denver to greet their leader with the salute.
George Bush had his three-fingered W salute that supporters flashed when greeting him at presidential campaign events in 2000. And now, if a Los Angeles creative agency gets its way, Sen. Barack Obama will see fans meet him with his own salute like the one above. "Our goal is to see a crowd of 75,000 people at Obama’s nomination speech holding their hands above their heads, fingers laced together in support of a new direction for this country, a renewed hope, and acceptance of responsibility for our future," says Rick Husong, owner of The Loyalty Inc. Husong tells me that he got the idea after seeing the famous Obama-Progress poster by artist Shepherd Fairey. "We wanted to get involved some way," he says. So, the agency came up with their own a symbol of hope and progress that also plays off Obama’s name. "We thought, ‘Let’s try and start a movement where even while walking down the street, people would hold up the O and you would know that they were for Obama,’ " says Husong.
And here at Ace of Spades is not only the poster that inspired the salute, but also the Star Trek episode about the university professor/leader of hippy, yippie drop outs searching for Eden that invented the said salute. Note that the leader is known as The One :

Many commenters have pointed out this hilarious attempt at a new rallying symbol for Obama.
These people are really stretching.
More: Several bloggers have noted the call-back to Star Trek‘s The Way to Eden, but I think Baldilocks was first. For those of us who missed out on TOS, the Enterprise is hijacked by a criminal former university professor and his loyal, hippie-like followers who are attempting to find paradise.

ha ha ha ha Kirk doesn’t like being called "Herbert". I’m old as dirt so I remember how the groovy hippies liked saying things like that to confuse the old folks who don’t even realize they are being mocked. Wanting to check into this a bit more, I found this entry at Wikipedia about the episode.
The group quickly shows a disrespect for authority and demands to be taken to a planet they call "Eden" (a reference to Garden of Eden). Eden’s existence is believed to be a myth however. The group refuses to cooperate with Kirk, calling him "Herbert", an insulting reference to his rigid and limited ideals.
The group is impressed by Mr. Spock however, who gestures with an oval "symbol of peace" the party makes with raised hands, and speaks of "The One". Believing Spock is on "the level", the group gives Spock more respect and agrees to go with him to sick bay for a medical examination. Medical scans reveal the party to be in good health, all except for Dr. Sevrin, who is shown to be a carrier of the Synthecoccus Novae virus, which has been accidentally created by technological society. Sevrin’s disease is fatal to anyone who hasn’t been vaccinated, but he nonetheless insists that the planet of Eden will somehow "cleanse" him. After interviewing Sevrin, Spock believes him to be clinically insane

Read how the episode turns out. The Eden that The One leads them to turns unexpectedly deadly. Moral of the story: Be careful following former professors with extravagant rhetoric & dreams, strange hand signals and big ears. He might not really be The One we have all been waiting for.
