Scuba Diving

August 20, 2008 Leave a comment

Do you love to go Scuba diving.   Well, I do.  I went to school and got my Diving Instructor certification, but I have not kept up with the dues and insurance.   But I still go diving whenever I can.  Mostly in vacations, since I live in the middle of the US.

But if you want to look for good information on what is going on in the diving world, you should register at Sport Diver magazine, it is the official magazine for PADI.  They have a lot of good information on gear and places to go diving., and also how and where you can get certified.

Trusted Tours

Trusted Tours has got a great site that offers tours of some of the coolest cities in the US.  They have a lot of good tours in their Chicago Tours page.  I have been to Chicago may times, but mostly in my younger years.  We have family up there and we would visit my Aunt, Uncles and my 3 cousins that lived there.

I have many great memories of Chicago in the winter and around Christmas time.  I remember one year when I was pretty young and thought that I heard  reindeer on the roof of their house.  And  I also remember going to see Pope John  Paul the second there when he came to  visit.  It was a  a great time to see the Pope, because I am half Polish and the Pope came from Poland.

One of the tours they give is a tour of the John Hancock building:

The Grand Tour of Chicago and Hancock Tower Combination

Duration: 5.5 hours  Price: $45.00
This tour offers everything that Chicago is famous for. You’ll travel
through both the North and South Side districts, the "Loop" and State
Street. You’ll visit the beautiful parks of Chicago and their
attractions plus the sky deck at the John Hancock Tower.

I remember actually staying on the 82nd floor of the John Hancock building.  It was so much fun, me and my brothers went all over the building and went swimming  there, I forgot whoch floor it actually is, but it was high up in the air. An I remember that  when you looked out the window, the cars looked like little ants from high up in the air.

I also remember visiting one of my friends that lived on the North Shore when I was in college.  It was the first time I say The Rock Horror Picture Show live at a theater.   It was a blast and I was amazed at how busy Lake Shore Drive is at all times of the day and night.

But now that I am older I would love to go on the Chicago Club Crawl:

Chicago Club Crawl

Duration: 5 hours  Price: $54.00

Cruise the blues in Chicago – they drive. Sit back and soak up the
scene, the spirits and the best of the blues at two of Chicago’s
hotspots, the Checkerboard Lounge and Kingston Mines. With No car and
No cover charge, you’re free to hop from club to club without missing a
beat.

I love the Blues and just last year I went to some pretty cool bars with one of my cousins when we went up to visit one of his friends near Hyde Park.

I would definately give them a try if you are going to go tone one of the many cities thay have on their site.  Some of the places I have been are on there, Tampa, I went to school there for a year and loved that city. The beaches were nice and the clubs are very good if you like Techno music.  At Trusted tours they have some cruises around Tampa Bay.   There is also Memphis, which my uncle lives at.  I have been there a couple times for Football Bowl games and  also basketball games at the Pyramid.  And they have some of the best BBQ in the world there.  The tours that Trusted Tours look  very good also, they go to Sun Records  and many other cool places in Memphis

BP Solar Decathlon

As many of you know I am not a worshiper of the Goracle’s New Church of Global Warming, but I am not against finding a new and cleaner way of producing electricity and get us off the carbon based fuel to power our homes.   So I am going to post about the BP Solar Decatholon.  It is a contest between 20 University teams to build the most livable, energy efficient and completely solar powered house.

BP has sponsored this contest along with the U.S. Department of Energy.  BP as been hard at work to help keep the environment clean and perfecting cleaner sources of fuel for power.  BP has invested $500 million dollars into the Energy
Biosciences Institute
, who in part with the University
of California Berkeley, the University of Illinois and the Lawrence
Berkeley National Lab to find bioscience solutions to reduce the
impact of energy consumption on the environment.

They are also produce more than 200 MV
of solar technology each year.  They also jointly own Nerefco
wind farm that produces enogh energy to power 13,00 homes that are carbon nuetral.

Enough about BP, now let’s meet the teams:

Carnegie Mellon:   Carnegie Mellon’s team is committed to delivering a successful house to
this competition, one that is competitive and showcases the importance
and beauty of sustainable design.

Cornell:  The Cornell University Solar Decathlon team is run entirely by
students, with faculty members serving solely as advisors, allowing
engineers and architects, business students and landscape architects,
graduates and undergraduates, and those experienced and inexperienced
in sustainablility to learn from each other and collaborate on a
fascinating and exciting project.

Georgia Tech:  Georgia Tech’s Solar Decathlon Team is highly interdisciplinary and
collaborative, reaching nearly all corners of the university. It
comprises a large number of students, faculty, and staff across the
Institute at large, as well as several consultants.

Kansas:  The Kansas team’s primary design priority is to capture the essence of Kansas – its landscape, history, economy, and resources.

Lawrence Technological University:  ALOeTERRA envisions an Earth healed by the development of
environmentally conscious designs. Sharing the intricacies of our solar
home generates public awareness, interest, and support.

MIT:  The MIT solar home recognizes the interdependence of our society and
seeks to show how the future home exists as part of a larger energy web.

New York Institute of Technology:  NYIT is dedicated and committed to improving energy efficiency through
interdisciplinary research and wants to encourage an “open” mind about
the benefits of solar energy technology.

Penn State:  The Penn State Solar Decathlon team will bring multiple disciplines
together to promote environmental stewardship and help advance Penn
State’s leadership in sustainability education.

Santa Clara University:  The SCU Solar Decathlon team is an interdisciplinary coalition of
approximately 200 engineering, arts and sciences, and business
undergraduate and graduate students. Of 800 students in the School of
Engineering, the smallest engineering school in the competition,
approximately a quarter have worked on the Solar Decathlon over the
past year and a half.

Team Montréal:   Team Montreal is a joint project of École de technologie supérieure,
Université de Montréal and McGill University. The Team proudly
represents its country with the goal of promoting innovation through
the creation of buildings that are entirely autonomous in terms of
energy by employing advanced solar technologies.

Technische Universität Darmstadt:  The goal of the competition for Technische Universität Darmstadt is to
present ideas for “year 2015 prototype homes” to the public –
demonstrating that all contemporary requirements to live in comfort,
aesthetics and private transportation, can be covered just through the
use of solar energy.

Texas A&M:  The focus of the Texas A&M groHome are sustainability, open source systems, disaster relief, and technological growth.

Universidad de Puerto Rico:  The School of Architecture of the Universidad de Puerto Rico at Río
Piedras (UPRRP), the College of Business Administration and the College
of Engineering of the Universidad de Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM)
joined efforts to participate in the 2007 Solar Decathlon competition.
Their mission is to create societal consciousness about the sun as a
technological, renewable, clean and feasible source of energy to
satisfy present and future power needs for mankind.

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid:  The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) has defined many objectives
of participation in the Solar Decathlon 2007 Project:quality, price and
timeliness as well as other aspects such as teaching and education.

University of Cincinnati:  With this project, the University of Cincinnati plans to bring together
science and art in the best possible way: by collaborating across
disciplinary lines, learning from each other, and perhaps even
discovering innovative and beautiful technologies in the process.

University of Colorado at Boulder:  Underlying the University of Colorado at Boulder’s development efforts
will be the guiding philosophy that renewable and energy efficient
building technologies must have broad consumer appeal to have a
significant impact on national and global energy and environmental
challenges.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign:  The mission of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the
Solar Decathlon 2007 is to achieve education through demonstration by
building a cost-effective, accessible and energy-neutral home.

University of Maryland:  The University of Maryland’s project embraces the Chesapeake Bay
watershed context for a smart, adaptable, resource-efficient home
powered by renewable energy. The house demonstrates the design savvy,
both traditional and 21st century, that makes solar power an integral
part of a sustainable lifestyle. LEAFHouse celebrates nature’s
abundance while having a light touch.

University of Missouri at Rolla:  The vision of the University of Missouri at Rolla: learn from the past
to better the present using future technologies that incorporate green
and renewable design.

University of Texas:  The mission of the University of Texas SolarD team is to provide
leadership in the renewable energy revolution for a more livable,
sustainable future through innovations in energy eficient building
design and environmental stewardship and to be competitive in the
biennial Solar Decathlons sponsored by the Department of Energy.

They also have a blog you can go to and see what is going on in the contest.  This is a good way to test out the newest forms of solar power and to see if it is feasible to use solar power to power our homes.  I am greatful that BP and all of these universities are doing this.  As I said before I am not in the camp that Global Warming is caused by man, but we do need to find cleaner forms of power.

Not only is it a refrigerator, it has the logo of one of the best guitar companies.  I don’t have a fender, I have an Ibanez, but Fender is one of the classic guitar companies.  I used to have a fender knock-off.

Go over to Car Guy Garage and take a look.  They have lots of cool stuff for the garage.

As many of you can see on my sidebar I have joined up with Pay Per Post.  I have always wanted to see if I can make a little extra cash from my blog, so I wanted to try it out and see what it is all about.
I forgot the actual blog that I found that I went and signed up to Pay Per Post, but I want to thanks them.
This blog is not free, but it is not really that expensive, but it would be nice to have the blog pay for itself and have a little extra golf money for the weekends.  If any of you out there have signed up and give me some feedback on what you think.  So far I haven’t really done that much with it, because I have been busy doing other things.  But I am going to see what offer they have.

Also I have signed up for the Pay Per Post Direct, it is also on the sidebar.  The Pay Per Post Direct concept is that you can pay me to post about anything you want.  I have it set at the minumun of $5, so it is not that expensive.  So if you want me to post about anyhthing you want just go to the sidebar and click on the the Pay Per Post  widget on  the sidebar.
