1939 : Nazis and communists divvy up Poland

On this day in 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union agree to divide control of occupied Poland roughly along the Bug River–the Germans taking everything west, the Soviets taking everything east.

As a follow-up to the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, (also known as the Hitler-Stalin Pact), that created a non-aggression treaty between the two behemoth military powers of Germany and the U.S.S.R., Joachim von Ribbentrop, the German foreign minister, met with his Soviet counterpart, V.M. Molotov, to sign the German-Soviet Boundary and Friendship Treaty. The fine print of the original non-aggression pact had promised the Soviets a slice of eastern Poland; now it was merely a matter of agreeing where to draw the lines.

Joseph Stalin, Soviet premier and dictator, personally drew the line that partitioned Poland. Originally drawn at the River Vistula, just west of Warsaw, he agreed to pull it back east of the capital and Lublin, giving Germany control of most of Poland’s most heavily populated and industrialized regions. In return, Stalin wanted Lvov, and its rich oil wells, as well as Lithuania, which sits atop East Prussia. Germany now had 22 million Poles, "slaves of the Greater German Empire," at its disposal; Russia had a western buffer zone.

On this same day, the Soviet Union also signed a Treaty of Mutual Assistance with the Baltic nation of Estonia, giving Stalin the right to occupy Estonian naval and air bases. A similar treaty would later be signed with Latvia. Soviet tanks eventually rolled across these borders, in the name of "mutual assistance," placing the Baltic States into the hands of the U.S.S.R. for decades to come. These "treaties" were once again merely the realization of more fine print from the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, giving Stalin more border states as buffer zones, and protecting Russian territory where the Bolshevik ideology had not been enthusiastically embraced from intrusion by its western neighbor, namely its non-aggression partner Germany. The highly vulnerable Baltic nations had little to say about any of these arrangements; they were merely annexed.

Squirrels Go On Attack At South Bay Park

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — An aggressive squirrel pounced on a 4-year-old boy in an attack last week in Cuesta Park in Mountain View, Calif.

The attack happened as the boy’s mother unwrapped a muffin during a picnic.

The boy had to get rabies shot after the attack. He is still getting the shots.

The attack is not the first one reported at the park. Mountain View Community Services Director David Muela said that as many as six people have been bitten or scratched by squirrels since May, and that the attacks have become more ferocious in the last month.

This past Monday, I took to this floor for the eighth time to discuss global warming. My speech focused on the myths surrounding global warming and how our national news media has embarrassed itself with a 100-year documented legacy of coverage on what turned out to be trendy climate science theories.

Over the last century, the media has flip-flopped between global cooling and warming scares. At the turn of the 20th century, the media peddled an upcoming ice age — and they said the world was coming to an end. Then in the 1930s, the alarm was raised about disaster from global warming — and they said the world was coming to an end. Then in the 70’s, an alarm for another ice age was raised — and they said the world was coming to an end. And now, today we are back to fears of catastrophic global warming — and again they are saying the world is coming to an end.

Today I would like to share the fascinating events that have unfolded since my floor speech on Monday.

CNN CRITICIZES MY SPEECH

This morning, CNN ran a segment criticizing my speech on global warming and attempted to refute the scientific evidence I presented to counter climate fears.

First off, CNN reporter Miles O’Brien inaccurately claimed I was “too busy” to appear on his program this week to discuss my 50 minute floor speech on global warming. But they were told I simply was not available on Tuesday or Wednesday.

I did appear on another CNN program today — Thursday — which I hope everyone will watch. The segment airs tonight on CNN’s Glenn Beck Show on Headline News at 7pm and repeats at 9pm and midnight Eastern.

Second, CNN’s O’Brien falsely claimed that I was all “alone on Capitol Hill” when it comes to questioning global warming.

Mr. O’Brien is obviously not aware that the U.S. Senate has overwhelmingly rejected Kyoto style carbon caps when it voted down the McCain-Lieberman climate bill 60-28 last year – an even larger margin than its rejection in 2003.

Third, CNN’s O’Brien, claimed that my speech earlier contained errors regarding climate science. O’Brien said my claim that the Antarctic was actually cooling and gaining ice was incorrect. But both the journals Science and Nature have published studies recently finding – on balance – Antarctica is both cooling and gaining ice.

CNN’s O’Brien also criticized me for saying polar bears are thriving in the Arctic. But he ignored that the person I was quoting is intimately familiar with the health of polar bear populations. Let me repeat what biologist Dr. Mitchell Taylor from the Arctic government of Nunavut, a territory of Canada, said recently:

“Of the 13 populations of polar bears in Canada, 11 are stable or increasing in number. They are not going extinct, or even appear to be affected at present.”

CNN’s O’Brien also ignores the fact that in the Arctic, temperatures were warmer in the 1930’s than today.

O’Brien also claimed that the “Hockey Stick” temperature graph was supported by most climate scientists despite the fact that the National Academy of Sciences and many independent experts have made it clear that the Hockey Stick’s claim that the 1990’s was the hottest decade of the last 1000 years was unsupportable.

So it seems my speech struck a nerve with the mainstream media. Their only response was to cherry pick the science in a failed attempt to refute me.

It seems that it is business as usual for many of them. Sadly, it looks like my challenge to the media to be objective and balanced has fallen on deaf ears.

SPEECH BYPASSED THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA

Despite the traditional media’s failed attempt to dismiss the science I presented to counter global warming alarmism, the American people bypassed the tired old traditional media by watching CSPAN or clicking on the Drudge Report and reading the speech online.

From the flood of overwhelming positive feedback I received, I can tell you the American people responded enthusiastically to my message.

The central theme was not only one of thanks, but expressing frustration with the major media outlets because they knew in their guts that what they have been hearing in the news was false and misleading.

Here is a brief sampling:

Janet of Saugus, Massachusetts: “Thank you Senator Inhofe. Finally someone with the guts to stand up and call it what it is — a sham. I think you have taken over Toby Keith’s place as my favorite Oklahoman!!”

Al of Clinton, Connecticut writes: “It’s about time someone with a loud microphone spoke up on the global warming scam. You have courage – if only this message could get into the schools where kids are being brow-beaten with the fear message almost daily.”

Kevin of Jacksonville, Florida writes: “I’m so glad that we have leaders like you who are willing to stand up against the onslaught of liberal media, Hollywood and the foolish elected officials on this topic. Please keep up the fight!”

Steven of Phoenix, Arizona writes: “As a scientist, I am extremely pleased to see that there is at least one member of congress who recognizes the global warming hysteria for what it is. I am extremely impressed by the Senator’s summary and wish he was running for President.”

Craig of Grand Rapids, Michigan writes: “As a meteorologist I strongly agree with everything you said.”

My speech ignited an internet firestorm. So much so, that my speech became the subject of a heated media controversy in New Zealand. Halfway across the globe, a top official from the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition challenged New Zealand’s television station to balance what he termed “alarmist doom-casting” and criticized them for failing to report the views of scientists in their own country that I cited here in America.

As the controversy in New Zealand shows, global warming hysteria has captured more than just the American media.

The reaction to my speech keeps coming in: Just this morning, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review newspaper wrote an editorial calling my speech “an unusual display of reason” on the Senate floor.

I do have to give credit to another publication, Congressional Quarterly, or CQ for short. On Tuesday, CQ’s Toni Johnson took the issues I raised seriously and followed up with phone calls to scientist-turned global warming pop star James Hansen’s office. CQ wanted to ask Hansen about his quarter of a million dollar grant from the left-wing Heinz Foundation, whose money originated from the Heinz family ketchup fortune.

As I have pointed out, many in the media dwell on any industry support given to so-called climate skeptics, but the same media completely fail to note Hansen’s huge grant from the partisan Heinz Foundation. It seems the media makes a distinction between ketchup money and oil money.

But Hansen was unavailable to respond to CQ’s questions about the ‘Ketchup Money’ grant, which is highly unusual for a man who finds his way into the media on an almost daily basis. Mr. Hansen is always available when he is peddling his increasingly dire predictions of climate doom.

ABC NEWS PROMOTES CLIMATE HYSTERIA

I have been engaged in this debate for several years and believe there is a growing backlash of Americans rejecting what they see as climate scare tactics. And as a result, global warming alarmists are becoming increasingly desperate.

Perhaps that explains why the very next day after I spoke on the floor, ABC News’s Bill Blakemore on Good Morning America prominently featured James Hansen touting future scary climate scenarios that could / might / possibly happen. ABC’s “modest” title for the segment was “Will the Earth Become Too Hot? Are Our Children in Danger?”

The segment used all the well worn tactics from the alarmist guidebook — warning of heat waves, wildfires, droughts, melting glaciers, mass extinctions unless mankind put itself on a starvation energy diet and taxed emissions.

But that’s no surprise – Blakemore was already on the record declaring “After extensive searches, ABC News has found no such [scientific] debate” about manmade catastrophic global warming.

You have to be a pretty poor investigator to believe that. Why would 60 prominent scientists this last spring have written Canadian Prime Minister Harper that “If, back in the mid-1990s, we knew what we know today about climate, Kyoto would almost certainly not exist, because we would have concluded it was not necessary.” ( http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/financialpost/story.html?id=3711460e-bd5a-475d-a6be-4db87559d605 )

On Tuesday’s program, the ABC News anchor referred to Blakemore as “passionate” about global warming. “Passionate” is one word to describe that kind of reporting, but words like objectivity or balance are not.

I believe it’s these kinds of stories which explain why the American public is growing increasingly skeptical of the hype. Despite the enormous 2006 media campaign to instill fear into the public, the number of people who believe that weather naturally changes — is increasing.

A Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll in August found that most Americans do not attribute the cause of recent severe weather events to global warming, and the portion of Americans who believe that climate change is due to natural variability has increased over 50% in the last five years.

Given the diminishing importance of the mainstream media, I expect that trend to continue.

I hope my other colleagues will join me on the floor and start speaking out to debunk hysteria surrounding global warming. This issue is too important to our generation and future generations to allow distortions and media propaganda to derail the economic health of our nation.    (source)

The gloves finally come off

Finally President Bush as responded to the Democrats.  He has called them waht they are, "the party of cut and run".  When are the Democrats going to realize that just turning a blind eye toward the terrorists will not make them go away.  The terrorists were attacking us long before Bush got into the White House.  If you look at the history of Muslim conquest, you will see that it doesn;t matter what you do or say to them.  It is either their way or death.  I just wish the President would started to take the gloves off a long time ago.  Then his ratings probably woul;d not have been so low.  But he never responded to the idiotic Lefts montras.  It is time for the US to start taking the War on Terror seriously, and no pussy-footing around.

Bush Defends Approach to War on Terror

President Bush, delivering the latest in a series of speeches on the war on terrorism, admitted to setbacks in Afghanistan on Friday, particularly in the training of police. But he predicted ultimate victory over resurgent Taliban forces there and against terrorists everywhere.

He lashed out anew at critics "who make a case that, by fighting the terrorists, we’re making our people less secure here at home. This argument buys into the enemy’s propaganda that the terrorists attack us because we’re provoking them," he said.

Bush’s speech to the Reserve Officers Association was the latest in a series defending his Iraq policy and the broader war on terrorism.

Bush expressed some disappointment with progress in Afghanistan, where the Taliban has regrouped, especially in the south, and where violence is rising.

"The training of the Afghan police has not gone as smoothly as the army," Bush said, citing "corruption and substandard leadership."

But, Bush added, "We’ve made our concerns known…When we see a problem, we adjust, we change."

Ex-Prez Carter: Bush has brought U.S. "international disgrace"

RENO, Nev. Former President Carter is urging northern Nevadans to elect his son, Jack, to the Senate to help combat a Bush administration he says has brought "international disgrace" to the country.

The former president told a crowd of about 300 on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno today that the nation is more sharply divided that it has ever been as a result of Bush’s policies.

The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, he says he’s deeply embarrassed that the American government now stands convicted around the world as one of the greatest abusers of civil rights. He continued the theme in a dinner speech to 700 at a Democratic fundraiser tonight, saying every past president has been a supporter of human rights, until this one.

Jack Carter is bidding to unseat Republican Senator John Ensign. Both father and son said Ensign must go because he has voted 96 percent of the time with the Bush administration. They say that in addition to bungling foreign policy, Bush has cut taxes for the rich to the detriment of working Americans.

The former president say that Bush’s policies have been a radical departure from what all previous presidents have done, including Republicans like Bush’s own father, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon and Dwight Eisenhower.

He says never before has the United States had a policy of pre-emptive war, as was the case in what he called an "ill-advised invasion" of Iraq.  (source)

Gaza militants ‘prepare for showdown’

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip are rearming and retraining for an imminent military showdown with the Israeli army, intelligence sources disclosed yesterday. Yuval Diskin, the head of Israel’s intelligence service Shin Bet, said 19 tons of explosives had been smuggled into Gaza in the past year. Other senior Israeli officials indicated that Palestinian fighters were acquiring more effective weapons. It is understood that Israel may use the unresolved kidnapping of a soldier in June as an excuse to renew major operations in Gaza to root out the new weapons threat. Egyptian officials applied additional pressure to Hamas by insisting yesterday that it secure the release of Corporal Gilad Shalit or risk plunging Gaza into "crisis" and a renewed military incursion. Cpl Shalit was captured by three militant groups and taken to Gaza, prompting a major Israeli incursion that was partially interrupted by the war in Lebanon. Brigadier General Shalom Harari, a military intelligence officer, said yesterday that Israeli forces might "go into Gaza in a big way" unless Cpl Shalit is freed. Accusing Iran of being behind the new weapons drive, he said Teheran had found willing partners in Palestinian fighters. "Iran is a Middle East superpower. For them it is very important to get rockets into Gaza to develop a threat that surrounds Israel from all sides," he said. "Meanwhile the war in Lebanon has renewed the will and added urgency to Palestinian efforts to upgrade their weapons systems." He said the arsenal at the disposal of the myriad militant groups in Gaza – which include Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade and the Popular Resistance Committees – remained less powerful than that of the Lebanese group Hizbollah. But he said the militant groups were exchanging home-made Qassam rockets for 122mm Grad B missiles, which had a long enough range to hit the major southern Israeli city of Ashkelon. While Palestinian groups have boasted of a home-grown anti-tank missile known as the Batar, intelligence officials in Israel dismissed it. But they revealed that militants have replaced the RPG7, the standard rocket propelled grenade, with upgraded versions that can pierce Merkava tanks. "They want to bring in weapons that ‘break the equation’ of our military superiority," said one intelligence official. "They want to be able to attack symbols of our power like the Merkava tank, the Apache helicopter, offshore missile boats and armoured bulldozers." In particular, the officials said, Palestinian militants have a "real appetite" to adopt Hizbollah tactics from the war in Lebanon, when Russian-built Kornet missiles proved deadly against tanks on the battlefield while longer-range Katyushas were directed at towns inside Israel. "The effort is to upgrade the rocket systems," said Brig Gen Harari. But he added that while some weapons experts from Lebanon and Syria had been smuggled into Gaza, the Palestinian groups were "not good at complicated weapons. You need courses to learn how to use them". In the Gaza refugee camp of Khan Younis, a Hamas MP said yesterday that talk of Palestinian weapons improvements were lies. "This is a bunch of lies meant to justify Israel’s attacks on us," said Yehiya Musa. "The situation in Gaza is the worst ever. Poland and the Jihadis

My mom sent me this link about the History of Jihad.  It is a very good historical site about the Jiahdis over the ages.  Teh one that most interested me was the one about the Jihad and Poland, Lithiuanis and the Ukraine.  The main character in sacing Western Civilization was a Pole named Jan Sobieski III.  He saved the day at Vienna and at many battles in Poland and the Ukraine.  Why does this interest me more thatn the others??  Well, because I am half Polish.   And the Poles have been the butt end of jokes for a long time.  But if you read your history, you will find that it was a Pole that saved The Western World from the Ottoman Empire. 

I really don’t agree with everthing that the people on this site say.  I don’t think that all Islam is a cancer and should be irradicated.  But, they do have great historical points and have some good insite on what the Global Jihadis are about.

When the Ottomans occupied most of Anatolia (modern Turkey) they found that their way into Europe was blocked by the surviving rump of the Byzantine empire, that held fast to their capital Constantinople – the gateway into Europe. For invading Europe, the Ottomans needed to overrun Constantinople, but that was easier dreamt than done due to the stubborn resistance put up by the Byzantines to defend their capital. To circumvent this obstinate resistance at Constantinople, the Ottomans devised a rearguard action and started their forays into Eastern Europe.

The first step of the Ottomans to work around this problem was to explore another way in to Europe by crossing from where the resistance was not as fierce. They moved down the coast and crossed the Aegean Sea in 1352.

The Ottomans gradually sunk their claws along the coast brushing aside the Venetian resistance from the sea and advanced into the Southern Balkans. The first major clash with the Serbs was in present day Kosovo at the battle of Kosovo Polje. Here the Turks showed their true colors as Muslims and using deceit and cruelty they crushed the Serbs at Kosovo Polje in 1389.

After this defeat, the Ottomans started their incursions into neighboring Bulgaria and Croatia. To liberate their nation and repulse the Turkish invaders, the Serbs and Bulgars appealed for help from other European Christian kingdoms. In response the Poles, the Croats, Illyrians (pre-Muslim Albanians), and knights from as far as Spain and France had joined the Balkan Christians to oppose the Ottoman Jihadis. The combined force joined to oppose the Ottoman incursions at the Battle of Varna.
